DRONES

Researchers at the University of Tokyo have been experimenting with a novel shapeshifting drone form, which can change it's shape to grip and pick up objects. Not sure what the real world applications would be for this, but it's interesting nontheless.

Drones have also been used in a recent experiment by UCSB Professor Yasamin Mostofi, in which two drones, one broadcasting a wifi signal, and another receiving, can fairly accurately see through walls to map the inside of a structure.

ROBOTICS

More Japanese researchers have been working on MetaLimbs, a project which gives users an extra set of arms and hands, which they can manipulate using their legs and feet.

PODCASTS

A reddit user posted a massive list of popular programming podcast episodes to the programming subreddit the other day, and thought you might enjoy it.

WIFI

Emmanuel Granatello uploaded a video and write up showing you how to take $20 of radio equipment, and use it to share an internet connection with a computer 2km away.

Blake Patterson showed off an interesting piece of hardware by engineer Paul Rickards, which enables you to use wifi on vintage computers, and connect to Telnet BBS'. He's got a little write up about it on his site.

VIRTUAL REALITY

360 Channel recently showed off FACE, their face and eye tracking technology for VR. It's designed to allow avatars to quickly emote by blinking, and moving the eyes, mouth, and cheeks for better communication in VR.

AUGMENTED REALITY

I've been seeing more videos of Apple's Iphone and Ipad ARKit lately, including this doorway demo by a company called Nedd. I wonder if Apple will be making headsets for this tech?

In other AR news, GunnAR showed off their AR technology for use in war. This tech allows gunners to receive orders in noisey situations, without needing to hear or see the commanding officer.

And finally, Robert Xiao unveiled Desktopography, a project which aims to bridge the gap between the physical, and augmented worlds in a work environment. It's interface allows users to move around, rescale, and navigate virtual objects using hand gestures.

THIS WEEK ON NODE

This week I wrote an article exploring the darker side of technology, and what I think may be in store for us in the coming years.

https://n-o-d-e.net/duality.html

Besides that, I have a few other projects lined up, including a decentralized and encrypted social network that a friend and I are working on. I've also nearly finished a few more hardware projects, that should be coming soonish.

Alright, thanks for watching. See you next time.
