VIRTUAL REALITY

Ifixit did an interesting teardown of Razer's OSVR HDK2 virtual reality headset. It'll be interesting to see if this platform takes off, and it'd be great if it's open source nature will enable ordinary folk to make their own VR rigs.

I also saw this the other day and had to share it. ImmersiveGamer83 on Youtube uploaded a video showing him playing Minecraft whilst playing Elite Dangerous, whilst inside virtual reality. We need to go deeper.

HACKING

Software engineer Kuba Gretzky wrote a detailed account of how he hacked an Android app in order to get free beer at pubs and restaurants.

DIY

Motorola launched a dev kit for their Moto Z smartphone, allowing tinkerers to add extra features such as displays, printers, cameras, various monitoring tools and more using a breakout board thing. Not sure how useful this is, but I'm still interested to see how it develops.

In other DIY news, Circuit Digest released a cool new tutorial showing you how to set up an offline wireless chat room using two Arduinos and wireless modules.

DRONES

Researcher Dario Brescianini showcased the Omnicopter, an omni-directional drone with six degrees of freedom, allowing it to generate forces and torques in any direction.

OceanLab also uploaded a video of their ReefScouts water drones. Swarms of these things can explore and profile reefs and any data collected can be sent back wirelessly.

AUGMENTED REALITY

Canon showed off their MREAL mixed reality system recently, designed to help engineers visualize and modify products in 3D augmented reality before bringing them into the physical world.

I also recently found a new Youtube channel that I think you should check out. It's called The Holo Herald and covers the latest happenings in the augmented and mixed reality industries. Lots of well filmed first-person demos using the Hololens.

3D PRINTING

Youtube user “Guy in garage” uploaded a video showing his single shot 3D printed gun dubbed the Songbird. I've got a feeling this is just a taster for the craziness that ubiquitous 3D printing will unleash on the world.

VIDEOS

While we're waiting for the defcon 24 videos to be uploaded, Hak5 released a new Defcon oriented episode, talking to some of the vendors. Quality content as always.

The next video by Motherboard follows amputee Melissa Loomis, who is the first person to test out a nerve remapping technique, allowing her to both control a prosthetic with her mind, and actually feel what it feels.
